Reviews: PureFit bars, MegaFruit

I’ve got a pair of yummy products to share with you today, both of them free of animal products, gluten, and refined sugars, and filled instead with flavor and nutrition.

I don’t worry about protein intake on a day-to-day basis; 40-50 grams is plenty for me. But sometimes, especially during higher-mileage weeks of marathon training, I try to give my hungry muscles a little extra. Having been consistently disappointed by the prevalance of milk, whey, white sugar, and artificial ingredients in commercial protein bars, I was intrigued and excited to receive a sampler pack of PureFit bars.

Finally, an all-natural vegan protein bar that actually contains a hefty amount of protein. Most vegan bars I’ve seen purporting to be “high in protein” only contain 10-12 grams at best. PureFit manages to pack 18 grams of protein into each bar! This is made even more impressive by the fact that they are all just 210-220 calories apiece.

PureFit bars are 40/30/30—meaning they’re made up of 40% carbohydrates, 30% fat, and 30% protein. (This is the principle on which the Zone diet is based, if you’re familiar with that.) They contain NO dairy, wheat, gluten, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, or hidden carbs. (The only caveat is that if you avoid soy, these bars aren’t for you.) PureFit sent me one of each of their five flavors: berry almond crunch, peanut butter crunch, almond crunch, granola crunch, and chocolate brownie. I dug into (of course!) the peanut butter bar first, which was quite tasty. (All the bars with “crunch” in the name contain soy crisps and/or nut pieces.)

The chocolate brownie bar was unexpectedly good. The flavor was spot on, like a very dense, slightly dry chunk of brownie.

The berry almond crunch was my favorite of the last three. All the PureFit bars are thirst-inducing (have some water nearby to sip between bites), but they’re also extremely filling, which is exactly what I need from a nutrition bar.

I also received some samples from MegaFruit Ventures. They specialize in dried superfruits—up-and-coming nutritional superstars whose health benefits are just being discovered. They don’t use any additives or preservatives when drying the fruit, so it’s truly all-natural. MegaFruit sent me one of each of their three fruits: mangosteen, baby pineapple, and lychee. Each two-serving package contains a total of 200 calories or less; if you’re the kind of snacker that doesn’t stop till you reach the bottom of the bag, this is a great thing.

The fruits are very firm and chewy, with a consistency more akin to goji berries than raisins. The antioxidant-laden mangosteen was slightly tart. The enzyme-filled baby pineapple was, well, pineappley! The sweet, vitamin-packed lychee was the softest, and in my opinion, tastiest. Yum!

      They were quite good, especially the lychee! Unlike any other dried fruit I’ve tasted.

    Oooh, are those vegan protein bars super expensive, or do you think they could sneak into our bloggie swap? 🙂 There’s definitely nothing like them in Australia. Speaking of, start thinking about what you might like from my end!

    P.S. You mentioned your marathon-training… does that mean your toe is better and you can run again? Hope so!

      They’re kinda expensive, and aren’t in stores in my area (I’d have to mail-order them by the box), but if I get some more, I can definitely pass one on to you!

      It pains me to say it, but no, I’m not better yet :[ The toe is ok, nail’s growing back, but my knee that’s been bugging me throughout the year took a turn for the worse a couple months ago. I haven’t been able to run since, so I won’t be able to run this year’s marathon 😥 It really, really sucks.

    Oooh yum, they both look amazing! I’ve never heard of mangosteen before! The dried lychee looks really good.

      I had only ever tried mangosteen juice before, so it was cool to try the fruit itself. It’s an Asian fruit with a sky-high antioxidant score :]

    Thanks for the review on the vegan protein bars! I’ve been looking for a good one. Those dried fruits look supper yummy! Looks like I am going to have to try both! :o)

      The vegan protein bar market is sorely lacking in options (though it’s getting better), so I was happy to find these 🙂
