Road trip to Dallas, 6th edition

December 20, 2010

Over the weekend (my last away from home!), Matt and I took yet another one-night road trip to Dallas, Texas.

Matt had picked up this vegan, gluten-free bar at LAX on his way back from a business trip (to Sydney, Australia!) last week; we shared it in the car on the drive south.

It was yummy and VERY peanut buttery, with a toothsome texture from the oats and peanut bits.

Our first meal stop in Dallas was at Kalachandji’s, a vegetarian (and nearly all vegan) Indian buffet, for Saturday night dinner. We ate there in May, and Matt particularly liked it, so we returned for round two.

I wasn’t shy about loading my plate with lots of rice, tofu, and veggie dishes. (I’ve been missing tofu lately…) One thing I really appreciate about Kalachandji’s is their commitment to using expeller-pressed coconut oil exclusively in their cooking.

Dessert was a trio of vanilla rice pudding, carob-walnut halvah, and vegan apple crisp.

The next day we hit up the all-vegan Spiral Diner for Sunday brunch. We ate there in May as well, and recently I’d been pining for the amazing Mexican-style seitan I had there last time. (Side note: what is with these vegan protein cravings?! Tofu, seitan, and I know I’ve dreamed of tempeh recently too, not to mention my beloved and much-missed beans and lentils. I’m not one to buy into the protein myth, but having been nearly-all-raw these past two months, I am feeling like my body would appreciate it if I bumped my protein intake back up a bit.)

I had coffee at Spiral Diner, while Matt drank an agave-sweetened limeade.

He liked it, as you can see.

Matt ordered The Big Taquito with a side of apple slices.

A grilled whole wheat tortilla encased a filling of tofu scramble, diced vegan sausage, potatoes, onions, red peppers, and avocado.

Like I said, I’d been yearning for the seitan filling from Bryan’s Brutal Tacos, which I’d gotten last time, but I still wanted to change it up a bit and not get the exact same dish. My solution? The Nachos Supremos, hold the TVP taco bits, add marinated seitan.

HELL. YES. Tortilla chips, cashew nacho cheese, black beans and quinoa, marinated seitan strips, pickled jalapeños, black olives, green onions, corn kernels, diced tomato, guacamole, and vegan sour cream. Oh man, oh man. SO not a virtuously healthy brunch, but boy, did I leave satisfied and smiley.

Even after devouring half my plate of nachos, though, the lure of the pastry case was too strong to resist.

A [huge] vegan, gluten-free peanut butter cup was taken to-go.

The dark chocolate coating had a nice snap, and its bittersweetness provided a good foil to the sugary, “butter”y, rich peanut butter filling. It was denser than a Reese’s, almost like a peanut butter cookie dough patty encased in chocolate (now there’s an idea!).

After driving back into Oklahoma City, Matt and I picked up dinner at The Wedge pizzeria.

Matt’s half had port wine and sundried tomato sauce, roasted red onions, crimini mushrooms, and a dusting of parmesan cheese. My half was cheeseless, of course, with [extra] house marinara sauce and generous amounts of artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, and Kalamata olives, plus a little cup of pesto on the side for dipping.

It was an excellent last weekend away from home! Now, onto my final week (::sniffle::) at the 105degrees Academy.

It is great to find such a wonderful food on the road. I love traveling, in many countries on the road there is very little choice, you always have to plan ahead to see where to stop and eat, which is OK, I guess, but it takes away a bit of the adventure of traveling, and it is a pain when when you meet the locals and they want to feed you.

Sorry, a bit of a bla bla bla here… anyway, what I just wanted to say is that that food looks great… mexican style Seitan… fantastic!!!

    ciao

Thanks, Alessandra! It’s true, planning ahead is invaluable in traveling. But trying new places is so much fun! To me, it’s worth a little hassle 🙂

NACHOS! I had a favorite vegan nachos plate when we lived in massachusetts and haven’t found one yet here. That one was awesome even without fake cheese. Taken to the next level with it of course. Enjoy your last week at 105! We will all be sad to not virtually attend with you daily.

That drizzle of salty, spicy nacho cheese sauce was actually one of the highlights—and coming from me, the cheese-hater, that’s really saying something!

I worked almost walking distance from Spiral Diner for 6 months and never went (although the Taco Stand down the street from it has some amazing veggie tacos and nachos) and finally went to the Spiral Diner after I moved to San Antonio and came back to Ft Worth for a visit. I wish I had been going when I lived close!

Nachos are always a winner in my book. What can I say? I’m Texan born and we love our Tex-Mex!

I’m glad you eventually got to visit Spiral Diner! Isn’t it crazy-delicious?

My favorite way of preparing and eating seitan is with Southwestern flavors! 🙂

You have the best out-to-eat meals of anyone I know! Everything looks fantastic 🙂 Although I love our town here in WV, and we’ve found plenty of vegetarian-friendly restaurants, the vegan options are slim-to-none!

Have fun during your last week at the Academy! Can’t wait to see pictures 🙂

Kylie, that is a huge compliment to me! I’m always on the hunt for yummy new restaurants, and I pretty much plan trips according to which ones I want to hit ;P Happily, it seems to pay off!

YUMMY…sounds and looks like you had a lot of yumminess over the weekend! I know what you mean about your body feeling like it needs something. I have so missed my fruit smoothies over the past couple of weeks, so I broke down and made one this morning. Even with it being 21 outside…ha My body said thank you very much…. 🙂

Haha! I’m no stranger to smoothies in winter…fruit is awesome any time of the year!

The pizza looks so awesome, despite not having the cashew cheese anymore. Seriously….what the heck, Wedge?

Yeah, I was a little disappointed when I saw they no longer had vegan cheese, but then I remembered “Wait a second – I don’t even LIKE cheese, vegan or not.” 😛 So in the end, I was a happy camper anyway!

Man! You ate like a queen! I need to go to Dallas ASAP.

Not your last week of 105 Degrees ever, though, right? Aren’t you there until March?

Oh, no! My last day here is Wed 12/22 (tomorrow!). In some ways, I wish I could stay till March 😛 But it’ll be nice to get home and get my life/career started!

*wriggles around impatiently in seat* Is Matt going to do a Sydney post? Oh, gosh, I hope he found some okay food there! I doubt anything compared to these delights, though. I am *so* envious of the vegan Nachos (can’t get interesting Nachos of any description in Canberra) and the peanut butter sweets…

It’s crazy how quickly these two months have flown by! I’m so proud of you, darling, and can’t wait to hear about both your coconut presentation and the next part of your amazing life 🙂

Sadly, Matt is not going to do a Sydney post 😦 He didn’t go ANY veg eateries (company lunches and dinners took precedence) and had all of one measly morning to explore the city. It’s sad, but we just decided it’s one more reason to go there together 😉

  13. December 21, 2010 9:41 am

Yummy stops Amber! Sounds like you will miss two things in your final week! I like that last picture of you two! 😉

Your final week at 105 is coming up!?!! Crazy how fast time goes.

It looks like you had another great trip to Dallas. Making me want to visit some day, yet again. Everything looks yummy but I’d most like to get my teeth on that peanut butter cup, dessert trio and the nachos. Wowzers!
