Meals at Whole Foods & Bliss Raw Café

March 4, 2011

On Sunday afternoon, Matt and I visited the Whole Foods at Park Lane in Dallas. Although we have Whole Foods at home in KC, we do not have one nearly as big or fancy as this store. While we were there, we picked up some dinner for ourselves. Matt got edamame fried rice…

…and I got Singapore noodles with tofu.

We also shared a Hail Merry raw Meyer lemon tart for dessert! Love these things.

Speaking of raw, on Monday night, we hit up Bliss Raw Café & Elixir Bar, my favorite raw restaurant besides 105degrees, for dinner. (Read about my previous meals at Bliss here, here, and here.) We visited with Dee, the owner, while sipping a hemp horchata (left; mine) and gojiberry lemonade (right; Matt’s).

Matt ordered the entrée I’d gotten the very first time we ate at Bliss—the Rawko Tacos.

They were just as good as we’d remembered, with sunflower seed “refried beans;” raw sour cream, nacho cheese, and two salsas; and lots of greenery.

I finally got something I’ve almost ordered every time prior—Coconut Kale Enchiladas.

The pliable coconut “tortillas” enclosed massaged kale, underneath oodles of raw sour cream, nacho cheese, and gremolata. I didn’t even blink at the greens! It was delicious from the first bite to the last.

For dessert, we had a choice between raw cheesecake and a raw brownie. You’d think we would’ve had enough raw brownies lately, but we couldn’t turn this one down.

I’m so glad we tried it. It was very different from my brownies, in fact, with a grittier mouthfeel (from palm sugar, perhaps?) and a less delicate texture. It’s amazing and delightful to me how something as simple as a brownie can be interpreted so many different ways. The walnut crumble, fudge sauce, and strawberries made this a brownie to remember!

I’ve still got a couple more road trip posts to go!

Aw, you know what, I thought of you several times while we were there…but it would’ve been so tough for me to find a meetup time I could’ve stuck to. Seems like everything we did on this trip was decided day-of (if not hour-of). I sorry! 😦 But as usual, I’m certain we’ll be back in a matter of months. Hopefully then, I can plan it better, and we can meet up! 😀

Yum. Every time you write about that place I wanna go there so badly. Those enchiladas look excellent, and I would have definitely chosen the cheezecake!

Rawko Tacos and Coconut Kale Enchiladas? My GOODNESS this sounds absolutely perfect. I just need to find out how I can replicate it in my own kitchen! You’ve been eating GOOD (don’t even get me started on that Meyer Lemon Tart…YUM)!

Oh I love Hail Merry tarts. Brought back 6 of the peppermint choc ones on the jet, when I spent a week in Houston for work last Jan. Thought my passengers would like them, but glad they slept most of the way home. More for me! Oh you are so luck to have access to some yums ALL THE TIME. I have to create my own cafe ASAP over here xxx

The drinks at Bliss look really interesting, and I’m not surprised about WFM being bigger in Dallas–everything in TX is gigantic 🙂

Their “elixirs” really are original; I love them.

So. Much. Swooning. When I travelled around the States in 2007-8 and again in 2009, I ate so many meals from Whole Foods, and every time it filled me with glee.

One day, I shall return, except this time raw food restaurants will be at the top of my list. After all, I know how good raw brownies are after making some myself, so I owe it to myself to try out these different versions 😉

I wish the hot bar at WF were more affordable…they always have the best stuff!

I want those enchiladas….badly. I might have to settle for recreating them once the mess of moving is done 😉

I plan to recreate the enchiladas too. I already did a test run that went great. Now, just gotta find the time to make a whole batch and post about it 🙂

Hi, I just got done reading your profile, so I’m very impressed that you had KALE enchiladas! Way to tackle the greens! 🙂 All the food looked super yummy.

Hehe, tell me about it! I was so thrilled that I liked them!

Sounds like greens have grown on you quite a bit!

Haha, wellll…I wouldn’t go that far 😉 Dee, the owner of Bliss, actually said to me “You like it light on the greens, right?” but I told her I’d trust her. In this case, I was rather pleased with the kale-coconut wrapper combo, I’m happy to say!

Oh, man – you can’t go wrong with Mexican! I have been so lazt since I got back on Thursday – have not had the energy to get in the kitchen!

I just had one of those lemon tarts the other day!

It’s true…for some reason, raw Mexican seems to turn out awesome every time.

Hey! Just found your blog 🙂 I’ll be back for sure! Awww…I so want to do a raw food restaurant trip around The States. We have very few over here in the UK 😦 and I long for a Whole Foods too. The nearest one is about 300 miles away 😦 Those enchiladas look AMAZING!!

The brownie may have been the best part 🙂 but it’s hard to say!

  19. March 7, 2011 11:46 am

I must go back to Bliss soon! They didn’t have any crazy good desserts when we were there.

And oh, how I love and adore Hail Merry Tarts. My favorite is chocolate, though.

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 7, 2011 4:25 pm

Yeah, their desserts are different every time we’ve been, so give ’em another try.

I still haven’t tried the choc HM tarts – I’m too stuck on the lemon!

Bliss sounds blissful. And, you got me: what is a gremolata (asks the woman whose husband calls her a walking dictionary)?

    🙂

Hehe! Gremolata is an Italian “herb condiment” made by grinding together parsley, lemon zest, and garlic.
