Mud Pie Vegan Bakery & Rawxies

April 7, 2011

Yesterday I had a coffee date with Callie from Rawxy; she designed my new logo and header. (If you’re reading this in Google reader, click on into my site and take a look. Any and all feedback is appreciated!) We decided to finally check out Mud Pie Vegan Bakery & Coffeehouse, Kansas City’s brand-new, first, and only vegan coffee shop!

Residing in a cute little house along bustling 39th Street, Mud Pie is adorable inside and out. They have two “living rooms” with plenty of tables, chairs, counters, and couches. Their main kitchen is on the first floor, behind the counter, but they have an entire second kitchen in the upstairs devoted exclusively to gluten-free baking. Very cool!

They offer a modest, but enticing, assortment of pastries and snacks…

…but it’s their coffee menu that excited me the most. Mud Pie makes all the drinks you’d find in a traditional coffeehouse, but all 100% vegan and dairy-free. There is no cow’s milk on the premises! Instead, they offer a bevy of non-dairy milk options: soy, almond, coconut, cashew, sunflower seed, and hempseed milk. Wow! Having such choices felt like a real luxury.

I ordered an almond milk café au lait, and since I’m so thrilled to finally have a place like Mud Pie in Kansas City, I bought one of their travel mugs to lend them that extra bit of support. I’m already itching to go back. If only I lived closer to 39th Street!

One more thing: Callie has just debuted her line of raw, vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, corn-free snack cookies called Rawxies, and she brought me a pack of the Cranberry Pecan ones to try.

I haven’t opened them up yet (I’m waiting to share them with Matt, ::grumble::), but they look delicious. If you’re interested in trying them yourself, you can purchase any of the nine different flavors of Rawxies here.

I’m glad you all liked the look of the red pepper-pistachio bisque. Let me know what you think of my new logo/header (either here or on Facebook), and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I live in Topeka and will be in KC before long. My daughter lives there and is going to make me a grandmother in a week or so. Can’t wait to try this place out. Vegan and gluten-free. Yay!

Johanna, that’s great! (And congrats early!) If you’re wanting GF goodies, try to make it to Mud Pie on a Wednesday, that’s when they make ’em each week.

I’m not crazy about the font, but I really love the design and how everything has been made uniformly purpled. The Rawxies look amazing, you’ve gotta review them when you get a chance!

Awe, thanks for the shout out 🙂 I can’t wait for you to try the cookies, too!! I had no clue their was an upstairs bakery dedicated solely to gluten free – ha. I did think though, that someone must live upstairs? I mean, If I were going to invest in that house, I’d at least want to live in it!

I’ve decided that once you get an adequate amount of feedback, we can revisit the header – I’m following the comment log on FB and taking notes 🙂

I love the header! I like her graphics too. I’d love to try out her food.

I love the idea of a vegan place having a separate GF kitchen. My kind of place!

      I knew you’d appreciate the dedicated-GF kitchen! 🙂

Love the new look! Good job to Callie for designing if for you. Her cookies look so cute heart shaped.

And what a cute and cozy little coffee shop. That’s great there’s one around even though not so close to you. I always wish there were more things like this in my neighborhood too.

I love your new logo and header–it looks so personable and yet professional at the same time: a wonderful combination.

Love the sound of your gf and non-dairy coffeeshack. And Rawxy–sounds like a great connection both for food and design.

Wait, we have a VEGAN bakery and cafe in KC now?! Yay!! 🙂

And guess who’s in town again this week? ME! Are you free to get together after work one night? I’m free Monday through Thursday, so let me know!

      April 7, 2011 8:43 pm

Sweet! What time are you off work? I’m free most any of those days (during the daytime), and I do believe I’m free on Tuesday night!

  16. April 7, 2011 7:37 pm

Oh my word that place looks AMAZING!! I always am wishing we had a place similar around here – or at the very least, a dunkin’ donuts with the option of dairy-free milk/cream. That’s awesome that Callie brought you some Rawxies, too! They look amazing. Love her. (and the new header!!)

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 21, 2011 4:59 pm

Gah, don’t even get me started on places that don’t AT LEAST offer soymilk! 😛

  17. April 7, 2011 8:00 pm

I would go crazy in a place like this! Coffee and a cupcake, please?! No vegan cupcakes here! Ug! I can’t make them, or else I will eat them ALL! Wanting to come visit… 🙂

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 7, 2011 8:26 pm

Do! You’ve got an open invitation to stay at my place if ever you want/need to 😀

  18. April 7, 2011 8:38 pm

Ohh, so cute. I will definitely check this out next time I’m in KC. It looks like they have done a really great job with the place. So exciting.

Also, love, love your new blog look. Love the purple. And the fonts. And the berries!

“Next time” you’re in KC? So this is a semi-regular occurrence?! You better let me know so I can meet you at Mud Pie for some coffee! 🙂

  20. April 7, 2011 9:40 pm

Yay, you made it to Mud Pie! I’ve been itching to get back there. Unfortunately it’s not super close to us either…although that might be a good thing cause I’m pretty sure I’d spend way to much time/$ there if it were very close. 🙂

    P.S. Love the new design!

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 21, 2011 5:00 pm

Yep, I made it, finally! 😛 Love it.

  21. April 8, 2011 6:20 am

Love the new header, and how you’ve got the purple theme threading through the blog completely. I am, however, concerned about the lack of death metal influence in the imagery… 😉

Rather envious of the non-dairy milk options you’ve got here! In Canberra, places still only offer soy, and there’s always a surcharge *sigh*

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 21, 2011 5:01 pm

Hehe! I DID consider going that route…but I wasn’t sure the world would understand 😉

I love the new header and logo – very crisp and clean! Of course, I also love purple so that swayed my vote!

I am so jealous you have a vegan coffee shop – if only we could get one close to my home!

High-five for purple! It’s my favorite color 🙂

I am loving the logo. It looks so fresh and great and very unique with the color.

Awesome! Thanks so much for the feedback.

  25. April 8, 2011 6:59 pm

I love the purple. I’m also quite jealous of that coffee shop. I hope it thrives. I would love a place with something besides soy milk for a vegan option.

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 21, 2011 5:02 pm

I hope it thrives too, I’m going to give it as much business as I can afford to 🙂

How fun that you two live close and can hang out!!! 🙂
It’s always fun to have someone around that has the same values in healthy eating!!!
I like the header….does she do this for a living???

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 21, 2011 5:03 pm

Yeah! I don’t really have close friends I can connect with about raw food, so it’s always nice to talk to someone who “gets it.”

She does it freelance, on the side, I think 🙂

  33. April 12, 2011 12:29 pm

Love the new look – but then it’s purple, which is a good start, I find:)

The work “vegan” is sledom seen in the UK outside a cafe – people would run in the opposite direction! You’re sooooooo lucky to have such a place. Me, envious? Well, just a little:)

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 21, 2011 5:04 pm

      Purple’s my fave! 🙂

I understand the stigma of the word vegan…sucks, doesn’t it? =/

  34. April 12, 2011 10:40 pm

Stop, yer killin’ me! The last apt I lived in in KC was in the building directly to the left of that coffee shop – the weird building with no windows on the front. I almost leased the building to the right of it with plans to open a comic book shop but missed out to another tenant by mere hours. ahhh, memories. For as long as I’ve known the area, the building that Mud Pie is in now was always one coffeeshop or another. 39th street was my haunt and I ate meat back then so D’Bronx was my second home. How wonderful it’d be to have had all these vegan alternatives back then. Is the bathroom in Mud Pie still wallpapered with book pages?

    • Amber Shea @Almost Vegan permalink
      April 13, 2011 7:10 am

Once again, you prove to me just how small this world is. How funny! I love 39th St. too; Genghis Khan is my favorite restaurant in the world. I didn’t check out the bathroom at Mud Pie, but next time I’ll be sure to drink an extra cup of coffee and have a look 😛

  35. April 17, 2011 5:23 pm

A vegan coffee-shop and bakery? Now that is just too cool. I wish we had something like that here where I live.

Those cookies look awesome, btw. 🙂
