Live Food Bar in Toronto = AMAZING!
Rewind to Sunday, June 12th, 2011…
Live Organic Food Bar was another Toronto restaurant I was itching to try, thanks to Lisa‘s writings about it, so Matt and I headed there that Sunday morning, the day after the wedding, for brunch. I have to say, from start to finish, this was my favorite meal of the trip.
We took advantage of the mild weather and sat outside on their patio, ordering smoothies to start. Matt got a chocolate-coffee mocha smoothie (on the left), while I ordered the Butterscotch Ripple (on the right). (Doesn’t that name alone make you drool?!) It had almond milk, coconut milk, banana, dates, lucuma, maca, and vanilla—in other words, some of my favorite ingredients and flavors in one drinkable delight.
For his meal, Matt ordered the raw “AB+J”: raw cinnamon-raisin bagels sandwiched with almond butter, mixed berry-cherry jam, and sliced banana. It came with a small side salad as well.
Luckily, he let me have a bite or two, and it was excellent! The bagel took a little work to bite or cut through, but that’s because it had that characteristic “chewy” texture of a non-raw bagel.
I got a side of roasted fingerling potatoes with my raw French Toast: almond-walnut bread with mixed whole-berry jam and maple-almond butter inside, and cashew fluff and a berry cream drizzle on top.
OH.MY.GAWD. This was one of the best raw meals I’ve ever eaten at a restaurant, and definitely the best raw breakfast/brunch dish I’ve ever had. The whole-berry jam was tangy and lightly sweetened, the maple-almond butter was sticky and delicious, the cashew fluff and berry cream drizzle were light and luscious, and THAT BREAD! It instantly reminded me of baked shortbread—the delicate texture, the way it crumbled magnificently beneath my fork, the buttery, melt-in-your-mouth flavor! The whole thing was breathtakingly perfect. (Oh, and the potatoes were great too!)
I was stuffed to the gills by the time I finished it, but had there been more, I would’ve certainly eaten it. I’d kill for this recipe! I wonder if it’s in their e-books…
Inside Live Organic Food Bar, they also have a number of raw packaged products for sale.
Miraculously, I abstained from buying anything, even THESE.
This meal alone was enough to make me declare that I HAVE to go back to Toronto someday. Preferably soon. Very soon. This food belongs IN MY BELLY.
P.S. – Rachael over at Passing Daisies gave me a Daisy Award last week and made me her Feature Friday star. Go check it out! Thanks again, Rachael!
all of this sounds amazing, and you captured STUNNING photos! 🙂
Aw, thank you! I’m not always sure about my photog skills, so thanks for the compliment 😀
Those breakfast dishes were nearly desserts themselves! That restaurant looks great.
They certainly were! No complaints here 🙂
wow, so pretty! I love raw food presentation. And of course, the flavors!
that French toast looks amazing. i cant even imagine the taste.
I want some!!!
Yeah! Glad you had a great foody experience while in Toronto 🙂 Next time you come back we must plan a blogger meet up! xo
I do definitely hope to be back! 😀
Wow, this looks awesome. I’ll be in Toronto next week, and I didn’t realize they had a brunch menu! I just looked at the regular menu and thought that was it. Might have to give this one a try.
Did you get a chance to try Live?! I want to know what you thought!
Great that you had such a good experience! I think I missed “the wedding”–busy with a family wedding of our own up here–great photos and it sounds like that restaurant has some things right! I love the edible flowers too.
Nom nom nom! I ♥ Live. Their ebooks are a staple in my kitchen 😀
I NEED those ebooks!
Man, that looks phenomenal! Gotta go back to Toronto soon 🙂
Ditto! 😛
I’m so thrilled about your post as I’m heading to Toronto next week. I’m definitely going to Live. Thanks for the tips!
You’ll have to let me know what you thought!
The french toast looks sooo good!! So does that AB+J!
I’m so glad I guided you toward Live! It is my favourite spot in the city. Next time you’re in town I hope we can find time to brunch there together. xo
Absolutely! Count on it 😀
I would seriously drive 2 hours to go eat at Live. I’ve considered it but nobody I want to go with has a passport! I am keeping this in mind for my Bday coming up. 😛
Whitney
DO IT! I swear, it’s so worth the drive, especially for weekend brunch.
Wow, this place sounds heavenly. If I’m ever in Toronto I’ll make it my first stop!
It’d be my #1 recommendation! 🙂
I swear to all that is holy, I almost had to stop reading at the smoothies. I read “chocolate coffee” and thought “Matt chose after my heart”, but then butterscotch?! Nothing butterscotch exists here (well, except for the odd sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce), and so I can’t even imagine the heavenliness.
I also love how raw food can make dishes that I’m normally uninterested in seem sparkly-wonderful. French Toast has never been a favourite of mine, but even before I read your rave I wanted yours!
This meal elevated both ‘butterscotch’ and ‘French toast’ to new heights of orgasmic delight!
Oooh I’m in Toronto right now! Will have to try this before I go back to Australia!
I’m so glad to see you made it to Live!
Wow. Looks fantastic! I used to travel to Toronto often for work; I wish I had know about some of those restaurants. Especially since I was on an expense account. 🙂
Ahh, no kidding! Some of these things were quite pricey, but most were worth it. 🙂
This looks awesome. Believe it or not I have not been there yet. At the time I was living in TO about 6 years ago I was just getting into raw food. I have to go next time I am there. Yummy.
HoLy MoLy!! Your brunch plate looks AMAZING!!! I have no word- I just want it so badly!
Girl, I was wondering where I can find the recipe for your raw blondie?? Can you give me the link?
Of course! I just set up a recipe index here (in the title bar above), and it’s the first one in the list of raw recipes. Enjoy! 🙂
I want these meals in my belly too!!! What a great looking meal!!!
I made that breakfast for you guys! so glad you enjoyed it!-Sarah
Did you really?! That is too cool! How’d you find my blog? Well, thank you, Sarah, for the most perfect raw brunch I could’ve asked for! 😀
I do so envy you your trip – now I need to visit Toronto, just to eat – but I am not a fan of flying – come on someone, invent instant time travel!!!!
Oh man, I hate flying too. Both the being-up-in-the-air part and the pain-in-the-ass getting-through-airports part…
We’ve been talking a lot lately about going to Toronto since neither of us have been to Canada. Thanks for sharing!
