VVC day 2, part 2: cupcake reception & vegan karaoke

August 29, 2011

On Friday evening after the Bob’s Red Mill tour, the Vida Vegan Blogger Conference officially got underway! After a stop at the registration table, I was gifted with this much-anticipated “swag bag.”

It contained a Vida Vegan Con bag, coffee mug, and program booklet, a bike map of Portland…

…Lotus Foods rice, a Vega energy bar, a Cascadian Farms granola bar, Food For Lovers vegan queso, Mary’s Gone Crackers curry-flavored Sticks & Twigs and mini chocolate chip cookie, Artisana raw pecan butter, Dandies vegan marshmallows…

…a PCRM magazine, Hannah K‘s first book My Sweet Vegan, a free Earth Balance coconut spread coupon, postcards and ads from Vegan Cuts, SoDelicious, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, Gardein, Daily Gourmet, and Alternative Outfitters…

…a Coconut Bliss shopping bag, a pepper grinder (with peppercorns), Tom’s toothpaste, a coconut meat scraper from Jen, vegan condoms (!), Hurraw lip balm, and soaps from Moxie Organix. WHEW! The organizers weren’t kidding when they said the swag bags alone would be worth the price of admission!

The actual conference opened with a cupcake and champagne receptionβ€”ooh la la. Heidi Ho Organics raw hazelnut cheeses were served with various crackers…

…and MANY different cupcakes (all vegan and some even gluten-free) were served along with plenty of flutes of bubbly.

Here’s me at the reception with Janessa of Epicurious Vegan (one of the con’s organizers) and Gena of Choosing Raw.

My vegan white chocolate peanut butter sold very well (Matt’s an excellent salesman), I got to meet and chat with SO many people, and the reception as a whole was fantastic. Afterwards, Matt and I joined a group of fellow con attendees at Tube, a nearby bar, where snacks like vegan potato salad…

…and vegan tacos were enjoyed.

Erin made a run to Voodoo Doughnuts and was kind enough to bring me a Portland Cream, which I saved for later.

Our group then met up with an even BIGGER group of con attendees at Suki’s, a nearby karaoke bar. Yep, that’s right folksβ€”we had ourselves a vegan karaoke night. Only in Portland.

Matt totally sang Billy Idol’s “Flesh For Fantasy.” Oh, yes he did.
(I posted even more photos from this night on Facebook, so be sure to check out my VVC album!)

Everyone had a blast that night, and Matt and I returned to the hotel room deliriously happy, especially since we then got to eat my reserved Portland Cream doughnut from Voodoo. I couldn’t resist “posing” it with a certain flier we found on our windshield after leaving the bar… πŸ˜‰

More Vida Vegan Con coverage is coming up!

Wow, so much fun! That swag bag is _epic_ (I don’t think I’ve ever used that word in this kind of context before).

Glad you made so much the most of it…

      September 3, 2011 12:53 pm

Haha! I find that word to be overused anymore, but in this case, I think it’s actually quite accurate. πŸ˜‰

Cannot. Stop. Laughing. I know that the condoms are in the little bag, but when I first looked at that photo after reading your text I saw one extremely phallic-looking object proclaiming “Good Grips” and another container espousing “clean and gentle”.

    Cannot. Stop. Laughing.

And then I remember why we’re such perfect besties, because you go and pose a donut oozing white cream above a stripper flier.

Almost as good as being there myself.

I knew that even if no one else wanted to comment on it, YOU’D appreciate the sploogey doughnut. πŸ˜‰

      • September 3, 2011 7:03 pm

I feel like I should be ashamed of that, but I’m quite the opposite.

Really? That’s odd…you’d think that wouldn’t happen, considering how far in advance registration closed! Sorry to hear that 😦

Hahaha!! Dirty. πŸ™‚ (in reference to a certain cupcake photo…).
