Sugar Cookie Shake (raw, vegan, gluten-free, high-protein)
My fiancé Matt is pretty easy to please in the food department. He tends to eat the same things every day, including lots of beans, big salads, smoothies, and oatmeal. He does have a weakness for desserts, but his cravings don’t vary much; he pretty much only ever requests one specifically (brownies), and he always acts a little let-down when something doesn’t contain chocolate. Although he’s my #1 recipe taste-tester, he’s not terribly expressive when giving me feedback—after giving him a bite of a new sweet treat, usually I’ll just get either a nod, a “Good,” or a “Maybe you could make brownies?”
So when Matt finished a workout last week and asked me to make something sweet for him afterward, and I distractedly asked him what kind of treat he wanted (fully expecting to hear “Brownies!”), I was taken by complete surprise when his reply was “Um…a sugar cookie shake!” You should’ve seen the look on my face! Not only had Matt just asked for something entirely out of the ordinary for him, but he’d come up with – all on his own – a brand new idea for something I’ve never thought of creating before. I was beyond delighted and downright giddy with pride. I still don’t think he understood what exactly the big deal was, but it put a smile on my face for the rest of the afternoon.
I got right into the kitchen and whipped up this quick, nutritious, and satisfying post-workout drink for him. Without further ado, here is Matt’s very own raw vegan Sugar Cookie Shake!
Sugar Cookie Shake
dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free, grain-free, soy-free, sugar-free, high-protein, raw
(with low-fat and nut-free variation options)
1 small or ½ large banana, peeled and frozen
1 cup filtered water
1 oz. (scant ¼ cup) raw macadamia nuts
1 scoop vanilla-flavored nondairy protein powder (like Sunwarrior)
½ teaspoon maca powder (optional, but awesome)
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of sea salt
Stevia, if needed
Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend until completely smooth. Taste for sweetness and add some stevia if desired. Serve immediately.
Yield: 1 big or 2 smaller servings
Per serving (if 1): 350 calories, 23.2g fat (4g sat), 23g carbs, 5.5g fiber, 19.1g protein
Per serving (if 2): 175 calories, 11.6g fat (2g sat), 11.5g carbs, 3g fiber, 9.6g protein
Substitutions
Water: nondairy milk (or even coconut water!)
Macadamia nuts: cashews
Variations
Low-Fat Sugar Cookie Shake: Cut 134 calories and 19g fat from the total recipe by omitting the macadamia nuts, replacing the water with ¾ cup almond milk, and adding a pinch of xanthan or guar gum. (It will lose its rich flavor if you do this, though!)
Nut-Free Sugar Cookie Shake: Replace the macadamia nuts with 2 tablespoons coconut butter, OR reduce the water to ¾ cup and replace the macadamia nuts with ¼ cup chopped young coconut meat.
Snickerdoodle Shake: Blend in ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon.
Cookies ‘n Cream Shake: Blend in 2 tablespoons cacao nibs.
Of course, after taking these photos of the shake garnished with cacao nibs, I handed it to Matt…and he immediately declared “Wait a second—you should add chocolate!” So in the end, I made this into a Cookies ‘n Cream shake for him (see Variation above), and indulged his usual chocolate craving after all.
Some things never change. 🙂
oh my gosh that sounds amazing! it’s got my mouth watering! i loveeeeee sugar cookies! (or at least i used to in my gluten-filled days!) 🙂
Who knew drinking a sugar cookie could be so delicious?! 😉
*Runs out the door to purchases macadamia nuts*
Oh my…sounds like those white chocolate macadamia nut cookies I used to be addicted to. Oooohhh…some white chocolate extract in this would be FAB. AND…I happen to have some Sun Warrior that a friend gifted to me from her stash. (We started a ‘cleanse’ 3 weeks ago…I failed miserably, lol.) My hormones detest maca, so I’d have to leave that out.
BTW…I am laughing about Matt’s response to your food. It must be a man thing. Mine does the same. He pretty much likes everything I make, but it’s ‘next time make some lemon cake’….or ‘can’t you make the chocolate cake the way you did last time?’ Even though he’s had the lemon cake and Hershey’s chocolate cake a BAZILLION times. Lemon and chocolate. He isn’t into berries and ‘frills’. Oh, well.
I am going to try a chai vanilla protein smoothie today (‘brewed’ a vanilla chai tea bag in my almond milk overnight), and tomorrow I shall have a sugar cookie protein smoothie. xx
Get this – when your comment landed in my email, I was JUST sending an email to someone else about where to buy white chocolate extract. Yes! I’m one of those weirdos who likes white chocolate way better than regular chocolate. 🙂 White choc-macnut cookies are my FAVORITE!
I think it IS a man thing, haha.
A chai-vanilla protein smoothie sounds awesome too!
Hahaha…you are psychic. 😉 I like chocolate anyway you wanna give it to me, but something about white white chocolate with nuts…
The vanilla-chai was awesome. Tasted like a cold, thick latte. Sugar cookie might land in my stomach this afternoon. xx
I have had this shake at least 6 times now (really does taste like a sugar cookie!..I used raw cashews as those were more easily available to me because of where I purchased them from…), and have also expanded on your recipe to create a coconut banana cream pie smoothie. 🙂
Ooh YUM!
I can’t wait to buy some macadamia nuts so I can make this!! It sounds truly divine!
Don’t forget, you could also use cashews! 🙂
I don’t have those, either! The macadamia nuts sound really yummy. 😀 Thanks, Amber!
Oh! Time for a shopping trip after all, then – hehe!
Exactly. But that’s okay, I can tell it will be worth the trip!
I stopped at a CVS and they happened to have unsalted cashews, so I grabbed those and made this yesterday. DeLISH!!! So good. Thanks!
Yay! So happy you enjoyed it 🙂
Sugar cookie SHAKE?! Yummeee!!! I’m sure Matt loved it. How is that you didn’t make one for yourself?! I’ll be trying this Amber!
He loved it – especially after I blended in the cacao nibs! 😉
Oh don’t worry, I had a sip…or five… 😛
Love this! It’s so simple. And the wheels are turning now, thinking about what other cookies can be turned into nutritious smoothies 🙂
er, make that shakes.
Smoothies, shakes, same diff. All yummy! 😛
now this is a shake that I want to inhale! gorgeous pics, too!
It was gone in about 6.2 seconds. 😛
You DID tease him with the chocolate 😉 Vanilla is nice for a change, but I’m a chocoholic at heart! Shake looks yummy.
Haha, yep, I did. He tasted and liked both versions, though! 🙂
Maybe you could make brownies? JK. It looks fantastic! Looking forward to trying it. 🙂
Haha! Actually I can’t believe he hasn’t asked me to make a brownie shake 😛 But you know, that’s a great idea…
Ha ha! Matt’s funny! But how awesome that he came up with this idea! I’d be equally proud if Paul came up with an original idea for something he wanted me to make him. Actually, I’d be proud if Paul would ask me to make him anything. His go-to snack is chips and pretzels (not so healthy).
Ha! Matt usually won’t budge from his Apple Pie Smoothie, though I can’t complain about that nutritionally…I mean, I wrote the recipe 😉
Hi Amber,
Okay, this is karazy. Your fiancé sounds just like my husband. Seriously! Maybe they are long lost brothers. That is so funny. 🙂
This shake sounds amazing. I love it, and I love that you offer so many variations. You rock lady.
Hugs,
–Amber
Hehe! They both clearly have great taste in women, so maybe they are 😉
I know you’re a nut-lover (er…you know what I mean) like me, so I’m sure you’d enjoy this shake!
Yuuuum! I never thought to throw in some cocoa nibs! I can’t wait to make this after i’m done with my juice cleanse! (BTW, i’m on day 7 and i’m 5lbs down too 🙂 Do you happen to know by chance if too much protein (such as the powdered kind we put in protein shakes) can cause weight gain? I was drinking a protein shake every evening as my dinner right after my workout and then next thing I knew the following week I had put on 2lbs like that! I was shocked! I had been working out and eating great but I had just introduced protein shakes into my diet as my nightly dinner. If you have any insight please share 😀
Way to go on your juice cleanse!!
Having just one protein shake a day shouldn’t cause weight gain…unless you’re 1) working out VERY VERY hard, 2) having a humongous scoop, AND 3) are eating too many calories throughout the rest of the day too. So altogether, it seems unlikely. That happens to me all the time though – my weight will suddenly swing up a little bit for no reason at all. Did yours end up coming right back down?
Yes it did drop 1lb a few days later. I figured it was just water weight from working out…. But I was under the impression that protein wont cause weight gain because no matter what it’s calories in vs. calories out. Although I safely was under my calorie intake all week. Maybe i’ll give it another go after my juice cleanse is over 🙂
Yup, could’ve been water weight or any number of other things – salt intake, amount of sleep, you name it. The body can be funny (and frustrating!) at times 🙂
Agreed! Thank you so much for your input! 🙂
YUM! And finally something to use that bag of macadamias in my pantry for.
Oh man, if you need macnut ideas, I’m full of ’em! I did post that white chocolate macadamia coconut butter awhile back… 😉
Funny someone else’s husband loves chocolate as much as mine. The snickerdoodke variation sounds best to me.
I’m getting the message that there are a LOT of oatmeal- and chocolate-loving husbands out there. 🙂
And here’s just another reason why you and Matt make such a perfect team/couple/MAGICPAIRING. xo
I think we’re pretty damn great together, too 😀
Agreed, Hannah. And you’ll get to experience a bit of it when you visit. 😉
ZOMG I can’t wait!
I love macadamia nuts but never thought to leave them in the smoothie this looks fabulous!
Thanks Kate! The macnuts make it sooo rich and indulgent.
Oh yum! That sounds so delicious! The oreo versions esp (Oreo Blizzards and Chocolate-Chip Cookie Dough Blizzards used to be my favorite treat)
Oh man, I haven’t had an Oreo OR a Blizzard in years and years…but I’ll tell ya, I don’t need one, when I have snacks like this! 😛
Super delicious, Amber! We had it this evening and loved it. I added some cocoa nibs at the end and just pulsed to add some crunchiness. Thank you!
Ooh, a Crispy Cookies ‘n Cream variation; nice! 😀 So glad you enjoyed it!
Yummers lady! My kind of smoothie!
Mine too! ;P
Looks yummy!! I like the different variations of the drink. Which is your favorite?
I think I like the “plain”/classic version best, but I also was surprised at how much I LOVED the Cookies ‘n Cream version! 🙂
Oh my! These look soo good! I definitely will be making these soon 🙂
Yay! I hope you fall in love with them, too 😀
Made this morning – linked you in my blog! Thanks again for the delicious recipe!
You bet! 🙂
That sounds absolutely gorgeous. I can’t believe I’ve never used macadamia nuts in any of my smoothies, that will have to change. Many thanks for a great recipe.
You’re quite welcome! The macnuts give it SUCH a rich and sexy texture. 😉
Wow, so easy and simple ingredients! And I love all the variations.
Thanks, Holly!
Yum! Just made this and it was awesome. I used cashews instead of macadamia. Very filling, and fun to try a non-green shake!
Who knew something with “sugar cookie” in the name could be so filling, right?! 😛 So glad you enjoyed it, Vanessa!
Excellent sounding recipe! I have added it to my blog: Gluten Free Vegan Living. And of course, I gave you credit: http://glutenfreeveganliving.com/vegan-sugar-cookie-shake/

Glad you enjoyed the recipe, Sandy! Thanks for the linkage. 🙂
The low fat version is pretty much my standard post-long run smoothie, using Vega Sport Vanilla, but I never thought to try adding cinnamon or cacao nibs…sounds awesome!
I’ve heard good things about the Vega Sport powders.
Try adding some macnuts sometime; it’ll take it over the top!
The Vega sport powders look good but I just used the Garden of Life Brand (USDA Organic) Vanilla Spiced Chai (was on sake + coupon at whole foods) and make the original recipe first-it was ok but when I added the cocoa nibs..Whoa yeah..Just drank it straight from my Vitamix.
I’ve been curious about those new GoL flavors. The unflavored was always a little too chalky for me…I bet the cacao nibs helped give it a better texture!
